Im going to start tennis and have lessons once a week…..what are some helpful things a beginner should know and do you hav be in really good shape to play well? if so, how can i improve… Thx =D

btw….im a boy 8th grade if that makes a difference =P

You don’t have to be in as good of shape as some sports — primarily soccer (lots of running), basketball (lots of running, smaller playing surface), track (nothing but running) or football. But it helps to be in some good shape. Playing tennis will put you in better shape.

The key to tennis is to understand the scoring, which you’ll learn, and to hit the ball where the opponent isn’t. You’ll learn about your ground stroke (hitting from the baseline) and volleying (approaching the net and hitting the ball there).

There’s no real preparation you need before starting lessons other than having a good racket (comfortable, lightweight, etc.), good shoes and proper clothing.

You’ll learn to do everything else as you go. Have fun. Tennis is a sport you can play for the rest of your life.

i’m sure your coach will tell you this, but remember to swing from low to high and aim the ball 4-5 feet above the net.
as far as being in shape goes, you dont need to worry about it at your level. don’t get me wrong, being in shape is very important, just not for beginner tennis. i would recommend going for a run everyday to start to get yourself in shape. once you start to get more serious about tennis, then you should consider weight training and a slightly more intense cardio workout

You’re really young and I’m sure you have loads of stamina! Its a great age to start tennis. There’s no specific shape to play tennis at all! You can be as skinny as Djokovic or as chubby as Kuznetsova. It all depends on your talent and energy.

As a beginner you should know – this is one sport you’ll LOVE. Just have fun and LIVE the game. The spirit of tennis is unbelievable and you’ll have an amazing experience. Don’t exert too much, and develop your game slowly. Good luck!

u don’t rlly have to be in good shape when u start out, ull get in shape as u take tennis or any other sport…the first and foremost is how to grip ur raquet, make sure the raquet is vertical n grip the raquet like ur going to shake hands with it-this is the eastern or continental grip-to be more precise, make sure ur pointer finger knucle is right on the second edge of the raquet-ur teacher will explain this…n make sure u do the forms slowly first for swinging n serving so u don’t get any bad habits….running alot helps with tennis n i also lift weights so that might help, but hey u only started but ull learn tons as u get going-good luck!

Keep your eye on the ball at all times and keep a firm wrist.

If you want to be able to consistently have good form while hitting the tennis ball , then yes you have to be in some kind of shape . Slow jog with ocassional sprinting. Your coach should show you how to hold the racquet and the correct form for hitting . So remember this when a ball comes towards you and its shoulder high or even higher you have to run back until it drops waist level then hit it . If you can tell the ball is coming over the net towards you and it is going to be low you have to run up so that you can hit it at waist level (your contact level) .If you hit the correct form that the coach tells you and it is waist level it should go in most of the time. So thats alot of running so you have proof now that you beter be in shape :)
