Tennis serve..HELP!!?

Hey I’m kind of a beginner/intermediate tennis player. I haven’t played on a team before, no lessons, but I live next to a tennis court so I play frequently. But anyway, I need help on my overhand serve. I know this forum isn’t very good for instruction like this that I would need, but if any of you guys have any tips for me, it would be much appreciated. I think I have the basic motions down, and the position of the body…but I cant seem to figure out how high to throw the ball, how much to let it drop, and how exactly to position the racquet when you swing. Anyway, thanks for the help guys!!

For the height of the toss, hold your racquet above your head as high as you can reach…that’s how high the toss should be, it is better to over throw than under throw the toss because if you under throw your serve will def be off.

You can’t really get specifics on these forums, but you should lean into the ball with momentum, striking the ball at the highest possible point. Be careful not to foot fault. The position of the racquet depends on what spin you are trying to develop.

The toss is very important to the serve. Hold the ball in your fingers/ crease where the palm is. Don’t hold it in your actual palm. Stick your tossing arm straight out, DONT bend it. Raise your arm, with the ball still in your hand. Once your hand goes above head level, let go of the ball. Dont throw the ball up, just let go of it naturally. Once you practice your toss a lot, you’ll get used to it and it will become consistent. Once you have this down, you can start to add the other mechanics such as bending your knees while doing your toss. And Youtube really helps.

Go out on the courts and serve for 30 minutes. Bring a ball hopper or bring a bag that holds at least 50 tennis balls.

    hey there,
Ummm. The 1 key for a good serve is the ball toss. To begin you should hold the tennis ball as if it was a cup, meaning your thumb and index finger should be parallel with you 3 other fingers underneath your index finger. Now pretend that ball is a cup filled with water you can’t tip the cup or you will spill your drink. Now you should throw the ball just to your right (for a first serve) and once you release the ball your hand should rotate right right round so the back of your hand is facing the sky heres a video for example look at his tossing hand

Now once the ball is in the air jump for the hit, don’t let the ball come to you, you have to reach up for it.

    hope this helps
